Summary
This article explains how to use the SmartSuggest feature in the Candidate Search tool for specifying keywords in the ‘Keyword/Expression’ box.
1. Details
1.0 Purpose
SmartSuggest automatically shows related terms when you type keywords in the Keyword/Expression box based on previous searches that you’ve done.
As you type keywords, SmartSuggest automatically displays related terms - based on whatever you’ve typed - in the drop-down, you can then select one of the suggested terms to be added to the ‘Keyword/Expression’ box.
Using SmartSuggest speeds up entering relevant keywords to search based on previous searches that you’ve done.
1.1 Matching of Keywords
SmartSuggest shows suggestions by matching earlier searches with what you have typed so far. In this, it matches for the longest prefix, and does not necessarily match from beginning.
For comma separated criteria:
- SmartSuggest will show all matching keyword criteria by searching for keyword sequences starting with what has been typed.
- For each keyword typed and followed by a comma, SmartSuggest will show suggested comma separated keyword sequences starting with the keyword you’ve typed.
If there are no keyword sequences starting with the first keyword you’ve typed, it will try to match keyword sequences starting with the second keyword you type and so on.
For Boolean criteria:
- SmartSuggest will show all matching keyword criteria by searching for keyword sequences starting with what has been typed.
- For each keyword typed and followed by a Boolean operator or a parenthesis, SmartSuggest will show suggested Boolean keyword sequences starting with the keyword you’ve typed.
If there are no keyword sequences starting with the first keyword you’ve typed, it will try to match keyword sequences starting with the second keyword you type and so on.
1.2 Using the Suggestion List
- The ‘Keyword/Expression’ text box is updated with suggested-item text only when:
- A suggestion in the suggestion-list is clicked, OR
- Enter is pressed when an item in the suggestion-list is highlighted
- An item in the suggestion-list is highlighted when:
- Up/Down arrow is pressed, OR
- Mouse over action is done for an item in the list
- When no item is highlighted:
- Up arrow takes you to the last item
- Down arrow takes you to the first item
1.3 What to be Careful About
Keep the following in mind when using SmartSuggest:
- Suggestions shown will differ based on the keyword type you’ve selected from the drop-down next to the ‘Keyword/Expression’ box i.e ‘All/Any of the Specified Terms’ or ‘Boolean Expression’.
So, for example, when you select ‘Boolean Expression’ in the drop-down, SmartSuggest will only show Boolean keyword suggestions in the suggestion list and not comma-separated keyword suggestions. The same scenario will apply vice versa. - Suggestions for Boolean keywords will be shown irrespective of the Boolean operator used to combine multiple keywords.
So for example, if you’d given the following Boolean search earlier:
“java AND oracle”.
When you start typing the keywords again in a fresh search but use the OR operator instead of AND i.e. “java OR …”, SmartSuggest will still show you the earlier search expression “java AND oracle” in the suggestion list. - Pressing the ‘enter’ key after typing keyword(s) will not result in any suggestion being filled in the ‘Keyword/Suggestion’ box unless you click on a suggestion or press ‘enter’ when a suggestion is highlighted.
